Co-hosting the Vintage Sewing Pattern Pledge

Hello!

If you follow A Stitching Odyssey, you'll know all about the Vintage Sewing Pattern Pledge, which has just been launched for this year. Last year I took part and managed to sew seven items from vintage sewing patterns.

This year, I am co-hosting! I'm really excited as Marie and I have a range of posts to bring you - interviews, inspiration, giveaways and prizes. It's going to be bigger and better than ever!

If you love to sew with vintage patterns, be sure to sign up at A Stitching Odyssey here. If you're not sure whether you're up for joining here's a few things to keep in mind:
  • You can sew as many or as few items as you like, this is totally up to you. You might want to choose one or two if you're new to vintage, or do a whole wardrobe.
  • Patterns up until the 1990s are eligible - yes that's a bit depressing that the 90s are considered vintage, but it opens up more possibilities for pattern choice, at least
  • Reproduction patterns are included
  • It's not just about 1950s dresses! You don't have to dress like you're from a black and white film to use vintage patterns. I personally love to see some love for patterns from the 1970s and 80s, where you will find pretty and practical garments. You can also sew accessories or toys and bags from vintage patterns, if that's more your thing. Some knitters have expressed an interest in taking part too, and are very welcome to join.
  • We will have prizes at the end of the year!
If you don't want to sign up but DO have a great collection of vintage patterns you'd like to share, please do drop me a line at kerry[at]kestrelmakes[dot]com or contact Marie at astitchingodyssey[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot[uk]

We would love to be able to feature some pattern collections on our blogs, so please do get in touch.

Once you've started making, you can let Marie and I know about your makes by tweeting using the #vintagepledge hashtag, commenting on our blogs or contacting us on the email addresses above. We will be pinning all makes to the Pinterest board.

This is my pledge;

During 2015, I, Kerry of Kestrel Makes will sew up at least four of my vintage sewing patterns.

Last year I went for three patterns and managed seven but this year I was still being cautious as I have a few non-vintage projects planned for the near future. I've only definitely decided on one vintage pattern I'll be sewing, which is not a garment. However I will definitely be delving into my beloved New Look Maudella collection, and I have a whole pile bought before Christmas that I haven't even blogged about. I think I developed a bit of an addiction...

Anyway, I hope some of you will be joining Marie and me as we spread the vintage pattern love - head over to A Stitching Odyssey for sign up and blog buttons

  1. Yay! How exciting that you are co hosting! I haven't yet decided if I will pledge - I need to have a think about what I want to wear and therefore sew, but I do have a rather lovely shirt dress pattern from the 70s that I bought when looking for my 1974 pattern, and that I'd love to make for summer. We will see...

  2. Yay, so glad to see this come about again, and so excited to see you are co-hosting! I failed miserably in 2014. I think I pledged 5 and sewed zero! This year 2015, I pledge to sew at least three of my vintage patterns. (a collection of about 50 not counting repro - eek - that is a very small percentage)

    1. Three sounds achievable! It can be really hard not to get distracted but I hope you get around to making them this year

  3. I've signed up this year to sew at least 2 patterns. I didn't want to over commit as I have non vintage things I want to sew as well, so even though I haven't decided which patterns to sew I'm sure I can manage to get 2 made.

    1. Sounds good Shelly. I'm the same as you in that I didn't want to over-commit and then be annoyed I hadn't met my target. Under promise and over deliver!

  4. This sounds great! I have a couple different patterns in mind that I want to sew this year but I need to sit down and really think about what I want to make. I love sewing dresses but really need to work on separates.
I have a nice collection of vintage pattern I would love to share!

  5. Oh man, I'm so scared to sign up, but I do have a few vintage patterns that I really love! I've always struggled to fit them... my narrow shoulders, thicker middle, and narrow hips seem to be the opposite of what women looked like decades ago and more than once I've looked at a muslin and just cut it up for scraps because I knew I couldn't get the fit down! But maybe it's time to take another stab!

  6. I'm so excited you guys are doing this! I pledge on Marie's post to sew 5 vintage patterns this year. I was thinking I should have specified 5 vintage patterns I've never sewn before, but I didn't want to leave out the possibility of including a couple of favorites if I want to, because the narrower I give myself limits, the less inclined I feel to do them. lol Excited for #vintagepledge 2015!

  7. I'm in. Loved your toy horse in December I found that rather inspiring. My mind is whirring with possibilities, it's going to be a matter of finding the time. Bring on the 70s but with comfy breathable fabric!

    1. Thanks Louise. Yes, 70s is the way forward. I'm also not a fan of the non-breathable fabric but have no right to be so sniffy since I hate ironing it's actually a good choice for me!

  9. I'm so glad I found your blog in time to join in this pledge! I've
collected so many patterns that I used to wear/make back in the 60s and
70s, and I'd love to re-make some of them. I pledge to make garments from
at least 4 vintage patterns in 2015.

    1. Hi there, the pledge is designed to be for vintage or reproduction vintage patterns. There are some repro vintage patterns available for download so that even if you don't have access to the paper patterns you can get a pdf version? Check out http://mrsdepew.com/ or also I think that Burda and Simplicity offer pdf patterns to download and they do re-issues of vintage patterns. Hope that helps - I'm not so knowledgeable about pdfs so if anyone else reading this can help out please chime in!

  15. Wow, the 80s and 90s are included? Now I feel ancient!!!! I'll be in this time, for sure. Last year I didn't sign up because I wasn't sure I really used vintage patterns, but in the end I made at least four vintage garments! Hmmm maybe I can commit to another four in 2015?
